The Joyce Matthies Dance Centre has brought dance to area youth for over 40 years. Classes in tap, ballet, jazz, lyrical and pointe plus combination classes for younger dancers are taught by caring teachers with college degrees. Besides dance the younger students learn sharing, following directions, co-operation, etiquette and consideration.The older dancers also learn about responsibility, dance history, dance composers and choreographers, famous dancers, ballets and musicals.
Performing opportunities include the end of the year recital held in May at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center, the concert in November by the Joyce Matthies Dance Ensemble, jr companies and select classes, performance in July at Crazy Days in downtown Albert Lea and other performances throughout the community when asked.
Select groups also compete in 3 dance competitions in the spring. Everything is done to give the dancer not only good technique but to be a better person and
